Dear Kapp and Linda,
Nativity Drama for your Children
If your family enjoys play
acting … or role playing here’s an idea for you:
The Christmas
story lends itself very easily to being acted out with the pieces of the
nativity scene. Karen and I bought
an inexpensive “rubber” one so that we could do this activity at our
house.
As a family
gather around your nativity scene, (you only have Mary, Joseph, and baby
Jesus in the manger set up at this time) and sing a few favorite carols
(let each person choose one). A
parent, or older child, can read the Gospel account in Luke 2 aloud. When the phrase, "Let us go over
to Bethlehem
and see … that is come to pass," each child comes forward with a
shepherd figure (shepherd, sheep, dogs, etc) and places it ceremoniously
at the manger. (You can do the
entire story at one sitting or spread the fun out over several family
evenings)
On another
night someone can read the account of the wise men. You can then begin
the Wise Men's journey to Bethlehem.
The three kings start out separately in far countries, perhaps even in
such remote places as the children's bedrooms. From there they continue to advance a
little closer each day, assisted by the children, on their hazardous
journey over bookcases and mantelpieces.
At last, on Christmas morning, they will arrive in splendor to pay
homage to baby Jesus.
Take
this idea and make it your own … this activity became a family tradition
in our home … we still have the “rubber” manger scene that gets set up on
the kitchen island and is remembered by our now adult sons.
Have fun
sharing yourself with your family!
